Sadly, the rumors you've been hearing about Boar & Castle Sauce are true: The manufacturer stopped making this classic sauce last year and it is no longer available. It's my understanding that there are several parties interested in buying the recipe and manufacturing rights, so there is a possibility that Boar & Castle Sauce might someday be available again. But that is all we know. We've had over 100 people email or call us, asking about this long-time favorite and wanting to be notified if and when Boar & Castle is back on the market. Many of these folks have shared stories of enjoying Boar & Castle Sauce for over 20, 30, 40 and even 50+ years, and of eating at the original Boar & Castle Restaurant in Greensboro. Many of these folks also said they know several people who want their Boar & Castle Sauce back, and want to order it by the case. In short, there is a LOT of demand for this sauce, and hopefully this will result in a deal being reached with a new manufacturer to resume production of Boar & Castle Sauce. But until then, if you want to stay informed regarding the status of this sauce, including notification if and when you can buy it again, your best bet is to subscribe to this RSS feed since we will have the latest news on Boar and Castle Sauce as it becomes available. My mother is 85 years old and she went to The Castle as a teen. I have enjoyed this sauce for most of my 61 years and I want it back!
ReplyDeleteHow can we get this done!
Hi Joe,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment, and for reading my blog. I wish I had an easy answer to your question, but we're merely an online retailer and not a sauce manufacturer. If we could, we'd try to license the manufacturing rights from the recipe owners, but that's just beyond our means. I've heard rumors that someone might resume production in the future. If that happens, we intend to re-stock ASAP. In the meantime, I'm doing all I can to stay informed - and I'll post any new info on my blog, so keep reading!
Thanks for your comment, and let's hope someone brings back Boar & Castle Sauce soon.

Gloria
Hey! Heard the REAL boar and castle is back! Will you be carrying? Does anyone have the recipe for the original B & C steak sandwich? And onion "rings" (were not rings) Want to make when I can find the sauce.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but the one out now is nice, but just not the same taste....
Hi Circe,
ReplyDeleteI'm following up on the rumor that the original recipe may be back, made by a different company not related to the original Boar & Castle restaurant and not in Greensboro. I know that it is not currently available, but their plan is to have it bottled sometime in February. I plan on sampling this new version and comparing it to one of my remaining bottles of the original Boar & Castle Sauce to see if it really is the same taste.
Thanks for reading my blog!

Hi, Gloria, I have such happy memories of my family enjoying Boar & Castle when I was a girl in NC, back in the 60's! I've been on the hunt for the original for a while, and did enjoy the Castle Sauce, but it wasn't quite the same. I was wondering, if you have an original bottle, are you able to post the ingredients? It would be awesome to experiment in the kitchen (until the real one hits the shelves again)! Thanks! Carolyn
ReplyDeleteHi Carolyn,
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading my blog and for your feedback. Although I do have a bottle of the final batch of the original Boar & Castle Sauce (made in 2007 I think), I've never seen the recipe for the original sauce. If you haven't tried the most recent version of the Thomas Castle Sauce, bottled earlier this year, I highly recommend that you give it a try. Thomas Gourmet Foods tweaked their Castle Sauce based on lots of feedback from folks like you, and their current version of Castle Sauce includes the "secret ingredient" that was missing from their earlier version. According to folks who grew up with the old Boar & Castle Restaurant and original sauce, the current Castle Sauce is the "real deal". I recommend you give it a try, and please let me know if you agree.

Gloria
I am so sad to learn this is gone... any word if it will return? I live up north now, but I would def have it shipped up. I ate it most of my life and it's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteHi Mommy Holiday,
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading my blog, and for your comment. In late 2008, Thomas Gourmet Foods came out with their Castle Sauce, which was pretty darn close to the original Boar & Castle Sauce. Since that initial release, Thomas has "tweaked" the recipe several times based on feedback from folks who were quite familiar with the original sauce. Earlier this year, Thomas finally hit on the missing "secret ingredient" and the current version of Castle Sauce is a dead ringer for the old original Boar & Castle Sauce -- and that's not just my personal taste-testing, but also according to folks with "inside information" on the original recipe. I'd love to know what you think, so please feel free to order a bottle of Castle Sauce and then send me your feedback.
Zestfully yours,
Gloria
